I just thought I should make a short public post about the clan_mitchell
situation, mostly since so many people are aware of it outside of my access list and some people are getting a very distorted view of what's going on. synecdochic
and I have apologized to each other and discussed why my fic upset her so much. People were approaching the writing fest from different angles and this caused some misunderstandings on both sides that lead to people being hurt. I can see now why she was upset, which had much more to do with the context and how people were responding than the fact that the fic was critical of the Mitchell family. I admit that my fic contained a fair amount of in-character hyperbole and it was a bit of a strawman argument, largely due to it's off-the-cuff nature as a comment fic. Unfortunately hurt feelings on both sides spiraled out of control and that made open discussion difficult at best. I'm sure everyone has had this happen to them at one time or another.
Also, I don't blame synecdochic
' explosion; the former is not the latter's keeper and she was not in a good place to act as a mod at the time. Any issues I might have with ivorygates
are not synecdochic
's problem, and any discussions that they do or do not have about it are none of my business. My only concern is that this kind of attack, by any person, makes a community an uncomfortable or even unsafe place for many people. I hope that in the future we can work out problems in a more polite and respectful manner, whether in public or in private.
The only other thing I have to say is that I hope people don't look at this a reflection on the clan_mitchell
community and shared universe. I know some people (that means you, fandom_wank) seem to be forming opinions based purely on what ivorygates
said rather than the original source material. All I can do is suggest people read Broken Wings
and other fics at the comm and draw their own conclusions.
In short, mistakes were made and unfortunately people were hurt, but I think we've come to an understanding and I for one think it would be best to put this behind us and move on. Comments are screened, since I've already discussed this elsewhere and I'm not sure there's much else that needs to be said in public. This entry was originally posted at http://slybrarian.dreamwidth.org/67283.html. | comments.
