Google+ powers ACTIVATE. (Many thanks to [personal profile] staranise for the invite.) I'm a bit uneasy about linking it to my fandom email, but I think that's hidden, so it should be all good. If anything, the fact that Google appears convinced that I'm either a marine or an airman should help distract its evil data-nomming ways.

10th-May-2011 02:02 am - SGU 2x20 'Gauntlet'
Blue Wings
You know, if the Stargate franchise had to go, I really can't think of a better way to end it that the SGU finale. It had a great plot, a wonderful mix of action and character moments for everyone, even minor characters, and the last scenes were really beautiful and poignant. Seriously, y'all, my eyes were watering. I don't think they knew the show was canceled when it was made and I think that's for the best, because they didn't try any over-the-top shenanigans like they did for the other two series. It's head and shoulders above the nonsense that was "Enemy at the Gates" and in my opinion surpasses "Unending" as well. The first half of season 1 was mediocre, but once they got a grip on the characters and toned down the dickishness the show started to shine, particularly in later S2. I'd recommend checking out the last four episodes, but I'm not sure they'd have the same impact if you didn't watch the characters grow to the point they're at now. I may have to create a list or something - there's no denying there's a few real stinkers ('Cloverdale') but that's nothing that other shows didn't have.

(One other point that I thought about while watching - the producers are still giant dicks, but I'm honestly not sure how much influence they had this season, because a lot of the problems SG has always had with women and minorities were mostly absent. It's consistently been passing Bechdel and the women have been far more integral to the plot they usually were on SGA, Teyla excepted.)

Anyway, I'm slowly getting back in a fic-writing mood, and I think I may try my hand at 'SGU: Lorne edition'. (Don't judge me!) Also, having a deadline for kink bingo is definitely motivating me to finish something up for that.

In completely unrelated news, I could watch Tyrion Lannister walk around insulting people all day. I may have to write a SG/Game of Thrones crossover. Probably crackfic, given that their styles and genres are utterly incompatible, but still.

28th-Jan-2011 10:23 pm - Season of the Cop Show
Blue Wings
It's been a while since I've posted anything and I decided that I should come up with something to prove to everyone but Quin that I'm still alive. Part of my writing block seems to be that I'm just not into Stargate as I used to be, and that I need to write something else to get some forward momentum. That lead to some thinkies about what I want to write. So, here's my thoughts on some current fandoms. Strangely enough, almost all of them are cop shows. It's a bit odd because I usually only go for Sci-Fi, but right now there's just not all that much on and there seems to be an oddly large amount of these going around.

Blue Wings
Since the end is apparently nigh, I've decided that I'll post a few thoughts about Stargate Universe. I'm honestly disappointed that it's been canceled. For all that the producers are colossal jerks, it wasn't a bad show. Not great, mind you, but most of the episodes were reasonably good and there were a couple of outstanding ones. (And some real stinkers, but, well, need I remind anyone of 'Space Race'?) It was getting steadily better in my opinion, but with the slipping ratings it's not surprising that the Syphillis channel canceled it. Putting it up against NCIS may not have been the brightest ideas.

A few general points:

Blue Wings
So, it has occurred to me that I have not posted in roughly forever (give or take a month). I have decided to fix that problem and give an update on various projects. I haven't been writing very much lately because between my mom's illness and trying to find a job I haven't had a lot of energy. Unfortunately, what I have been trying to write hasn't helped much.

Minions, kree! Does anyone have recommendations for good tutorials on icon making and photo manipulation? I'm using GIMP, but I'm pretty sure the same principles will apply no matter the program. I'm particularly interested the fine art of sticking heads onto bodies without them looking absurd.

I just thought I should make a short public post about the [community profile] clan_mitchell situation, mostly since so many people are aware of it outside of my access list and some people are getting a very distorted view of what's going on. [personal profile] synecdochic and I have apologized to each other and discussed why my fic upset her so much. People were approaching the writing fest from different angles and this caused some misunderstandings on both sides that lead to people being hurt. I can see now why she was upset, which had much more to do with the context and how people were responding than the fact that the fic was critical of the Mitchell family. I admit that my fic contained a fair amount of in-character hyperbole and it was a bit of a strawman argument, largely due to it's off-the-cuff nature as a comment fic. Unfortunately hurt feelings on both sides spiraled out of control and that made open discussion difficult at best. I'm sure everyone has had this happen to them at one time or another.

Also, I don't blame [personal profile] synecdochic for [personal profile] ivorygates' explosion; the former is not the latter's keeper and she was not in a good place to act as a mod at the time. Any issues I might have with [personal profile] ivorygates are not [personal profile] synecdochic's problem, and any discussions that they do or do not have about it are none of my business. My only concern is that this kind of attack, by any person, makes a community an uncomfortable or even unsafe place for many people. I hope that in the future we can work out problems in a more polite and respectful manner, whether in public or in private.

The only other thing I have to say is that I hope people don't look at this a reflection on the [community profile] clan_mitchell community and shared universe. I know some people (that means you, fandom_wank) seem to be forming opinions based purely on what [personal profile] ivorygates said rather than the original source material. All I can do is suggest people read Broken Wings and other fics at the comm and draw their own conclusions.

In short, mistakes were made and unfortunately people were hurt, but I think we've come to an understanding and I for one think it would be best to put this behind us and move on. Comments are screened, since I've already discussed this elsewhere and I'm not sure there's much else that needs to be said in public.
